Frequently Asked Questions
Product Names
Have you ever wondered what the names of LIVOS products mean? Special products deserve special names! In 1981, the idea of using terms from the Celts emerged.
The Celts considered nature sacred, and they believed in the divine power present in every plant, stone, and animal. LIVOS has embraced this reverence for nature and strives to promote biodiversity and conserve finite resources by using renewable raw materials.
Furthermore, LIVOS products are designed to have:
- Great coverage,
- maximized durability,
- easy maintenance, and
- possibility for renovation.
Like the Celts, LIVOS benefits from diverse influences and unconventional thinkers, constantly evolving. Each Celtic name has one or more translations and correlates with the product's intended use.

Vegan Products by LIVOS
Vegan, environmentally friendly, and health-conscious - in our guide, you will find all the essential information about LIVOS plant-based natural paints.
As a responsible manufacturer of environmentally friendly natural paints made from renewable and natural raw materials, LIVOS is committed to people and nature. But are all LIVOS products vegan? In the following, we address the most important questions regarding our vegan products made from purely plant-based ingredients.
1) Which of our products are vegan?
In accordance with our company philosophy, we attach great importance to preserving nature as the basis of life in the production of LIVOS natural paints. Therefore, most of our offered products are vegan. Upon request, we can provide you with a detailed list of all vegan natural paints, varnishes, oils, as well as cleaning and care products.
2) Why can't all our products be vegan?
As a sustainably oriented provider of natural paints, we strive to use as few animal-derived ingredients as possible in the production of LIVOS natural paints. However, in combination with other raw materials essential for maintaining the quality of LIVOS products, certain animal-based components such as beeswax, chitosan, or shellac have proven to be irreplaceable so far. Nevertheless, we always stay informed about scientific progress, including promising attempts at producing plant-based chitosan.
3) What are the purposes of animal-derived ingredients, and why do some products not require them?
Animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax provide particularly protective properties for surface coatings, contributing to durability and sustainability. Additionally, shellac acts as a clever barrier against pollutants while allowing moisture to pass through. Since shellac is derived as an excretion product of lac bugs, there is currently no vegan alternative available for its production.
4) Our products, such as natural paints or cosmetics, are free from animal testing; how do we test their compatibility instead?
Instead of animal testing, we employ comprehensive calculation methods for assessing the potential hazards of our products. Furthermore, all ingredients used in the production of LIVOS products undergo internal quality control. This includes purity and drying tests, odor assessments, as well as obtaining up-to-date safety data sheets. Additionally, we test our products based on common DIN standards, such as DIN 53160 regarding saliva and perspiration resistance or DIN EN 71-3 regarding heavy metal migration.
5) Do our suppliers also conduct animal testing?
Based on our current knowledge, none of our suppliers perform animal testing on the ingredients they provide. Due to the long-standing use of substances like the main raw material linseed oil, there are already sufficient toxicological insights that reliably exclude the necessity of animal testing.
