Make garden furniture winterproof – Tips for proper maintenance

Where to store wooden garden furniture in winter?

The best place to store wooden furniture in winter is the garage or a dry cellar. Good ventilation is important. And it should not be too warm either, because low humidity and high temperatures, as usually prevail in living rooms, can lead to cracks in the wood.

Storage: dry, but not too warm

If there is no dry storage space available or if the furniture will be used occasionally also in the winter, it is possible to keep it on the terrace or the balcony as long as it is covered with a waterproof tarpaulin. However, condensation water can form under the tarpaulin. So this is why it is important to regularly check the garden furniture in winter.

The right care for garden furniture

LIVOS offers special products with which you can protect the surface of your wooden garden furniture for a long time. As different wood types have different demands on the care products, LIVOS offers various products.

Protect your garden furniture with high-quality products

The first step of a proper wood treatment consists in a thorough cleaning of the garden furniture. Remove remnants of old paint or glaze with a simple trowel. If the wood has been treated with a pore sealing paint (e.g. varnish or oil paint), it must be removed completely before priming by stripping or sanding. In the case of open-pore paints, it is sufficient to slightly grind the surface with abrasive paper. In the next step, the primer is applied (usually in the form of oil). Depending on the product, it can be applied with a brush or by spraying. Subsequently, finish the wood with all-weather paint, topcoat or oil.

Products for winterproof wooden garden furniture

For the choice of the right final treatment the wood type and the state of the wood are decisive. A versatile product is the KALDET-All-Weather Stain. It forms a weather-resistant layer that protects the wooden furniture from rain and UV light all year round. Furthermore it is available in a variety of colors which allows you to personalize your wooden furniture. KALDET is also the right choice for dry or highly absorbent wood. The other LIVOS products complement the application spectrum of the KALDET-All-weather Stain.
