Brushes and rollers: Finding the right painting tool

Painting tool: invest in quality

High quality tools are a prerequisite for good results. Cheap rollers and brushes do not absorb the color well and lose lint or bristles. Therefore you should not go for the cheapest products, but invest in brushes and rollers from the middle or upper price segment.

Paint walls and ceilings with a roller

With a paint roller, you can cover large areas in a short time. Paint rollers are made from synthetic fibers or from natural products. If the paint manufacturer gives no other recommendation, a roll of sheepskin is usually the best choice. When purchasing, make sure that the roller is not wider than the paint bucket, otherwise you have to decant the paint before painting. For corners and edges, the manufacturers offer small roles (5-10 cm wide).

Brushes: The practical helpers

Brushes are available in numerous versions, each designed for specific purposes. There are brushes made of natural bristles or synthetic bristles. In case of high-quality brushes the natural bristles are usually made of (wild) pig bristles and are generally known as "Chinese bristles". For water-soluble paints synthetic bristles are more suitable because natural bristles usually quickly soak up water. For paints based on resin or dilution most painters prefer natural bristles.

For those who prefer using a brush instead of a roller for corners and edges, round brushes are a good choice. Especially radiator brushes can be used for a wide range of applications. Their long handles not only make it possible to paint radiators and the wall behind, but also allow the color application in areas which are hard to reach.

How to correctly glaze and varnish

For varnishing, there are special rollers made of plastic. They have a fine-pored and smooth surface. For glazing use shorthaired rollers and soft flat brushes. Pour the glaze and the varnish into a roll-off container, so that the roller can absorb the color well.

Your shopping list for painting and varnishing:

  • Brush, small and / or large paint roller (for painting or varnishing)
  • Roll-off-grid (for paint) or Roll-off-container (for varnish)
  • Telescopic pole for an easy operation
  • If necessary radiator brush for hard to reach corners
  • Covering foil
  • Masking tape
