Combining color and wood: What fits together?

Combination of wood types: Striking or simple?

When you set up a room with wooden elements, you can either choose the same wood for floor and furniture, or combine different types of wood. The first option creates a calm and harmonic atmosphere, whereas the use of different types of wood creates a contrast and emphasizes the furniture.

Individual pieces of furniture made of different wood are ideal to set accents. They add variety to the color scheme, without overwhelming the eye or creating too much unrest.

Interior design: Color and wood types

When combining wood with the color of the wall and ceiling a similar principle applies: Similar colors are harmonious, complementary colors break up the space and create accents. To find out if colors work together harmoniously or complementary, use color wheels or color charts from the manufacturer.

In the case of wood there are three basic color groups: Maple and birch belong to the yellow woods; beech, alder and cherry are reddish and oak and walnut are classic examples of brownish tones. Within these categories, however, there is a wide range of nuances.

Examples of color designs

Walnut is a rather dark brown wood which, in combination with shades of beige and dark red, creates a refined atmosphere. Yellow and mango tones combined with dark brown wood create a warm and harmonious ambiance. Green colors - not only in connection with dark wood - create a fresh and stimulating atmosphere. A classic combination: Walnut in combination with a classy wine-red.

If you want to put an accent on light wood such as maple and birch, use colors such as red or anthracite. Mocha tones, by contrast, harmonize with light wood and create a relaxing atmosphere.

Many furniture and floors are made of beech wood. Depending on the quality and processing of the wood, the color tends towards yellow or red. Violet and blue tones are therefore a contrasting complement Massive, rustic oak can be accentuated with cool, muted colors. Also yellow, orange, red and turquoise are colors that can be combined well with oak.
